The Denver Blizzard 2006

Image
The people in Denver must be having it really hard. People are stranded at the airport. The U.S. Post Office is closed. But it sure looks beautiful with two feet of snow. This reminds me of the Denver Blizzard of 1982. My husband Richard, my four sons and myself wanted to stay with my mom for Christmas but we found ourselves in Raton, NM with a ground blizzard, where the wind was whipping up around 50 to 60 mi/hr. The van died on the freeway and we need to find something with alcohol in it. We found some aftershave, Turbo and Hawk, in our bags. Richard went out and we tied him to the front of the car so he wouldn't blow away while he poured the aftershave into the carburator. The van started up and we headed for the nearest offramp. We saw a motel sign lit up and this was in the middle of the day. We signed in and found that there was no heat. Our kids ranged in ages of 4 -12 and we had to call friends that lived in Raton. We stayed at the friends where there was plenty of warmpth...

Christmas, Christmas

Image
It's beginning to look like Christmas..Already been to a Ladies Fast where we study Scriptures and write a letter to God with what we want to see before next year..mostly relationships and salvation for my loved ones. Hoping to go to Phoenix for Christmas. There won't be snow on the ground but the weather should be great. Palm trees, swimming pools, farming, warm weather and tons of malls will be what I will look forward to there. At home in Vanderwagen it's been 5 degrees waking up in the morning. We've had no hot water for three weeks and hoping to get the part before too long. There are two cats and two dogs that can all rest in the same room around the wood stove. There is a sense of change in the air..for me? for my family? I don't know yet but I'm anticipating something good. "Christmas, Christmas, hear the angels sing" from one of my own songs is looking forward to the time when Jesus will return. "Oh, the joy of seeing our Lord with the ...

IT'S SNOWING!!!

Image
It is finally snowing. Two weeks ago we were in Phoenix where my son Matt and his lady Lesli were married and the temperature was around 65. Now we are finally getting a much needed snow. The roads were slippery this morning and we passed one accident, a fender bender. The schools were closed and I am working. It took almost an hour to get to work which usually takes twenty minutes. With the holidays around the corner there is still plenty of preparing to do. I love to bake cookies and decorate the house. I have to get started doing that but with drama practice for Christmas that's going to have to wait. I wrote the play for Christmas this year and it's called "The Reason for the Season" with five scenes. I hope I can add pictures later. I can't use my computer at home just yet since the service is down. I can't wait to get higher speed. I love this time of year even though the temperatures dip down to single digits.

Getting Ready for the Holidays

It's tough not having service for my computer. I end up doing all my e-mailing at work. I've been very busy at church. We just finished our "Hallelujah" party, or Halloween with over 20 games, free dinner, lots of candy, door prizes, a skit from our drama team at church. The next thing on the agenda is a service to recognize Israel. I got the program together with songs I learned at a church in Page, Arizona. The kids will be doing a dance to Hinei Ma Tov and we'll have several Jewish songs and prayers said. Then we will be getting ready for the Christmas program...This year I wrote the program called "The Reason for the Season". I hope to get some pictures taken and can download them later. There will be plenty of Christmas songs.

IT'S BEEN A WHILE

It's been a month since I last entered a blog. Been very busy getting my son to Phoenix and Flagstaff to take care of business but my son Steven had a visit in Maine. He is still there at the Skowhagen School of Painting. Check out his blog at www.flyingsaguaro.blogspot.com . He's been so busy that he can't put blogs in either. Anyway, after all this running around my son Daniel has finally caught three squirrels living under our mobile home. A lady at work loaned me the trap and with peanut butter spread on a styrofoam plate with sprinkles of rice cakes they all went for it. We took them about five or six miles away to let them out. We still have one more, I think, to catch. They are just trouble. We lost two phone lines from two bedrooms and now we have one. I hope we get the other one. I found a great place for your photos too at www.photographycorner.com where you can submit any photo in contests they offer. It has been an interesting summer. I have so many photos I...

I WISH I WAS HERE AGAIN!!!

I lived at Lake Powell for ten years and miss the water skiing, the camping and the great garden with beautiful roses. My boys all learned to swim here. We had a cabin cruiser and would take half a day to get to Rainbow Bridge. This was a great place to raise a family. My boys remember this wonderful fishing, swimming and camping place. Check out the www.wayneswords.com for more information and pictures. You can't beat this place for fun activities through the summer. I left many friends here to move to Phoenix.

My Second chance

Image
My life was in a tizzy after my husband died three years ago. I didn't know what to do except keep working and continue going to church. I found a church family that has taken me as their widow and has supported me in every way. I know the work I do there , playing keyboard, leading worship and belonging to the drama team, has given me the momentum to continue here. All my sons are musically inclined and artistic. My oldest is now in Maine attending the Skowhagen School of Painting and Sculpture. I'll try including his link in my blog. Anyway, I'm content here, though I have longings to travel and have considered a stint on a Mercy Ship. My friend in Phoenix invites me to go to Mexico off and on when I can and enjoy the ocean, the shells, the wildlife, seals, pellicans, porpoises and the fish and clams that are huge. My garden is contained in pots and my yard is over 1000 sq ft. My hummingbird feeder has nourished some seven hummingbirds at this date. Our 3 acres of ...
