"CAMP NATIVE AMERICA"

Image
Camp Native America - June 23 to 26, 2008 Yesterday, June 23rd was the beginning of Camp Native America, held by Summit Training Post, St Michaels, Arizona. I camped outside in my little one person tent. I took the day off to be a part of the camp start up and help in any way I could. So, with that in mind, the team from New Jersey asked me to do two hours of crafts plus the hour before the evening service. That was only for Monday. The rest of the week I'm to do an activity just prior to the evening service. Tonight, I'll be using a Bible game, questions and answers. Two people are placed back to back on a newspaper and set at the edge. As they answer the questions they move closer to the person behind and then try to push the other off the newspaper. It's called Newspaper SUMO, like the wrestling term. Hopefully, I'll get more pictures taken and put it in a slide show by the end of the week. Daniel has been busy working nights so I get home about a half hour before h...

"I Can Only Imagine"

Image
This was made from several pictures that I had on my computer. I love using slide because it's free and you get such a wide variety of music to use. We sing this song in our "Easter Play" at church. They are such a great group of musicians.

Camping in Oak Creek Canyon, Arizona

Image
Mother's Day Weekend – May 9,10,11 – Matt, Lesli, Solomon, his friend Daniel, Daniel and myself went to Oak Creek Canyon to go camping. Daniel and I got there ahead and found a place at Pine Flat, the first campground you come to going toward Sedona. The others were packed out. We got our campsite up before dark. Matt brought two extra tents that he found while working and gave us one of them that looks like a Hogan. The next day, Matt and Lesli slept in. I couldn't find the milk so I gave Solomon and Daniel dry cereal, really dry, some snack food and fruit. They went off to check out the creek behind us then we all headed toward Sedona and packed a lunch for later on. We didn't put the sandwiches in the cooler so they got a little warm. We checked out the stores, the galleries, the arts and craft items, Navajo and other native jewelry. I took tons of pictures of the beautiful red rock cliffs that surround Sedona. We stopped at an ice cream place but the cones were $5 each....

Highlights of the Baby Boomer Retreat, Daytona

Image
What can I say? I am exhausted but in a good way after experiencing the marvelous Diva Retreat. I know Beverly must have been exhausted as well as Carol, her assistant who recently lost her father and aunt. I tried to comfort her as best as I could. Friday, when I arrived, there was Nate, Beverly’s husband at the airport holding a sign with my name on it. He was very friendly and helped me with my luggage. What a great husband Beverly has. He didn’t know where the TV station was. He had an address but when we got to that address, we asked if that was the place and they pointed us to the back of the campus. We finally found the address and the personnel snuck me in and seated me in the audience. There were several women on the panel and I had wished they could have held meetings, especially the one on finances. When I arrived at the hotel, Pam helped me get my key at the desk and up to my room where I got settled. I roomed with Pam, Rhea and Karen. What a wonderful mix we were and enjoy...

"DIVA Woman", Song Parody

Image
The following is a song parody taken from "Pretty Woman". Wow, how technology has changed. One of the DIVA ladies, Rosie Horner, asked someone to come up with a song. I went through a bunch of songs to put lyrics to and thought "Pretty Woman" would be perfect. I changed the lyrics to read "DIVA Woman" and the following song is the result. Now take in consideration that the background music was recorded on a piano at church on a cd. Then I made a telephone call and sang over the cd on the phone..Amazing to be able to do that. I guess that is how all of the great radio blogs are done too by Beverly Mahone that I mentioned in my previous blog. Hope you enjoy this. I wished I hadn't cleared my throat at the beginning but you can get the idea. I'll have to try this again sometime. It was a little challenging and fun to do.

A Short Interview -Beverly Mahone

The following is a short interview regarding the Baby Boomer Retreat and Beverly Mahone who is the founder of the Baby Boomer DIVA's. This weekend, April 18 to 20th, she will be hosting the Spring Retreat to be held in Daytona Beach, Florida. Beverly is a well known radio talk show host and blogger. You may have heard her on http://www.blogtalkradio.com/passions Kathryn : Beverly, when did you get started in Communications and did you take classes in college to help? When did you start interviewing people? Beverly : My favorite subject in school was always English and I always had the gift of gab according to my mother. I knew “way back when” that I would make a living through my writing and public speaking. And over the years, that dream turned into a reality. From the moment I entered Ohio University, I was on the journalism track and I've continued to move forward ever since. I stated interviewing fellow classmates when I was in junior high school as a reporter for my school...

Baby Boomer Divas

Image
April 18, 19 and 20th, I will be on a plane to Daytona Beach, Florida to experience a Baby Boomer retreat. This will be the second time I've traveled long distance by myself. Several meetings are planned for women over 40. The whole idea came from Beverly Mahone, a radio talk show host and blogger who unbeknownst to her has raised awareness that women over 40 are alive and well on planet earth. More can be said by looking at her link http://www.enjoyyourmenopause.com/ . I thought it would be something I would enjoy and as the weeks and months have passed I have met many women who I consider my friends now. There are business women, artists, musicians, teachers, mothers, grandmothers, herbalists, aerobic instructors, celebrities, talk show hosts, ministers, bloggers and just great women from around the nation and abroad. Daily we email each other on several topics and interests and since we all share a common bond, our age, we have many things in common and many interests to discus...

The Easter "Passion" and my son

Image
Last week Daniel had quite a time spiritually. He had me up 'til after 2 am two nights. I was in the midst of practicing for the Easter "Passion" play, described in my last blog on my space. Well, Daniel, 29, has never attended anything that I’ve been involved in and has been fighting God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit for some time now. He attended church as a baby, child and young person but through the teen years he stayed aways from church. One night last week after having too much to drink, he started in on “why was I born and I just want to kill myself” and he had told me to hide the knives. That same night he told me that after an accident where he had suffered a severe concussion in 2002, he had been told by the attending physician that his blood work showed that he had leukemia. What a thing to tell me. I couldn't believe it. Daniel had said he was drinking because he thought he was going to die and didn’t want to go like his dad. After two separate nights of thi...

What Is It Going to be America?

Image
The following is an article I wrote after hearing President Nixon’s speech regarding the Viet Nam War. This was written in 1969. I was still in college and getting ready to be married. But after hearing the speech I was inspired to write something that may or may not ever get read. Many people today don’t think that America will ever be destroyed or that Americans would be enslaved by another country, ideology, religion, or foreign army. Believers in God think we will always have freedom to worship but those freedoms are being chewed away daily. What is written here almost forty years ago remains the same today. Instead of Communism being the threat, it is Islam and its army of terrorists. It also is the liberal media, liberal politicians that will be easily swayed to hand America over. Will we be silent? Will be get involved? Please read the following and you be the judge. What is It Going to be America? Upon hearing President Nixon’s speech, I was enlightened about many facets of the...

Larry Norman, "king of Christian rock" Tribute

Image
A Tribute to Larry Norman, 4/8/1947 – 2/24/2008 I’ve been a Church musician and worship leader for over 40 years and the Lord has given me a wider view of music styles and have included many in my worship listings. Was Rock and Roll a part of my repertoire? Well, for years, my father told me not to listen to Rock and Roll but when I became a Christian, I realized that God made us to create. Rock was created for a reason, to glorify the Lord. Rock and Roll music had a certain thrust, a force, to yell or scream in some cases a thought, a feeling, a doctrine or impression. I saw that so many young people listened to rock and loved the way it moved them. When I first heard Larry Norman and “I Wished We’d All Been Ready”, I thought the song was powerful and brought many images to mind. I remember hearing it also in a movie, “A Thief In The Night”. That movie brought an urgency for me to stay committed to the Lord and watch for His appearing. Larry has been referred to as the “Father of Chri...

Piano Helps from "Music Tech Teacher" and Others

Image
Piano is my instrument. I have been playing since I was a child. While attending college I would sneak into the practice rooms just to play. I would carry old lesson books in and also learn how to play by ear. The instructors gave me persmission to use the rooms when they weren't occupied. I thought they were very understanding. I never did have more than three years of lessons that started when I was around eight or nine The following are places you can go to get help with playing the piano: Metronome http://www.metronomeonline.com This is where you can find a free metronome when practicing pieces that require a certain beat or rhythm. Many times the most frustrating thing about playing any piece is not knowing slow or fast it should be and what the composer wanted. We will interpret how we think a song should go but in reality the composer has a different angle all together. The following will introduce you to Diana Rogers, a piano teacher and friend. LADY D’S Helps http://lady...

My Dear Valentine

Image
Yes, Valentine came and went but I am not disappointed too much. My friend in the office received a huge bouquet of roses, lilies, stocks and some other flowers that was the biggest arrangement I had seen in years. I wrote a poem entitled "My Dear Valentine" and shared it with my friends on my space and my DIVA friends and also Wow Gals, a yahoo group. I miss my husband and miss doing romantic things like going to dinner or a movie or just the two of us going anywhere together and talking. He wasn't very romantic in the beginning or our relationship but realized he had been forgetting me on the holidays and on my birthday and tried to make up for it. Here is the poem: "My Dear Valentine" My Father who is in heaven is full of compassion and love. He tenderly watches over you in His wondrous home above. Why worry or fret about your life, what you should eat or drink? He will provide your every need above all that you ask or think. So give Him praise this Valentine...

Christmas in Phoenix

Image
Well, first of all the drive to Phoenix went well. There was no snow to make it difficult for me as I have driven in the snow but don't like it. I stayed with my son Steven and wife Eileen the first night. Had a bite there to eat. The next day I was supposed to stay with Michael. He had been cleaning for a few days to prepare for me to stay with him on Christmas Eve..When I arrived I met his new girlfriend Suzi who loves him very much. She was apprehensive in meeting me and afraid I wouldn't like her. We immediately became friends. She was everything I thought. With all that has happened in her life she has met the challenges well. She is shorter in stature than myself but has beautiful eyes and skin and carries herself with confidence and pride. She is a lovely lady and I hope Michael will listen to her advice. She has a lot of wisdom. Christmas Eve was spent making homemade Cinnamon Rolls. I got the recipe on myrecipe.com and it called for 2 packages of yeast and chilling the...

"Eliminate in 2008"

Image
When I was alive in 2005, I thought “great in 2008” but “no”, the Lord said, it is time to just “Eliminate,” things that burden us and stop trying to procrastinate. It’s time now to rid our lives of bitterness and hate. Eliminate the excess body fat, the bad diets and weight, to go on those walks in the park or try to roller skate. Try to eliminate those bad decisions and start to state our commitment to the Lord, His Word and our mate. Here I am alone with God and want greatly to anticipate what lies ahead for me and mine as we enter this “2008”. I am touched by the needs I knowingly underestimate. The price of gas bites and the bills they yearly appreciate. So many things to eliminate like tv, movies, candy I ate. Like bad relationships that use up my time, I’ll alleviate. When there are so many other things to do that are great like knitting, crocheting or serving a meal on a big plate. I never get bored because there’s much to do on this date. I could send a greeting to a friend or...

"Making Navajo Fried Bread"

This last Thanksgiving, my son Steven videotaped me making fried bread. I am really surprised to see so many people, so far, 449 on You Tube looked at the video. How cool is that. Anyway, he wanted to finish it up with making the chili for the fried bread. I did the video on one take. I guess I have been cooking since I was a child. My husband was Navajo and we were married 27 years. He passed away almost five years ago but I still make the fried bread for my son Daniel or special occasions when I have plenty of people to enjoy it. Before him I was also married to a Navajo man Lemuel and through his mother Dorothy and sisters Linda and Ruth, I learned to make the fried bread and also floured tortillas. Enjoy. Let me know what you think. You can leave a comment.

My Christmas Card 2007 for my friends

Image
The following was what I put together to share with my friends and family on my space and blogger and my email family. It consists of happenings in 2007 but of course there was a lot that couldn't be included for the sake of time. This year I hope to get my Christmas cards out and make a few batches of Christmas cookies to share with my friends here in Gallup, NM. It has snowed here three times so far with about 16" of snow accumulated. I am still working with the internet company and they are planning a pleasant Christmas party on the 21st. They are putting us up at a nice hotel and then we will have dinner at Garduno's, a fine Mexican Restaurant. My son Daniel won't be able to come because he has to work. Daniel will also have to spend Christmas here and there's a good chance he might not be able to go to Phoenix for the Christmas day with the family. I had made plans to go and spend my Christmas with my kids. For some reason Daniel doesn't like Christmas. It...
